Latvian Blues Band Music: Now Available All Over the World!

The Latvian Blues Band has just concluded an agreement with the Blue Skunk Music company in Chicago on distributing the band’s music throughout the world.

Blue Skunk Music distributes blues and jazz recordings. The Latvian Blues Band can be proud of its agreement with the Chicago-based distributor because now, during the band’s 10th anniversary year, its sound will become available to fans not just in Latvia and the United States, but all across the globe.

"We know that we’ve been noticed and appreciated in the wide world of the blues, and this agreement is a major factor in our future, because it represents our ability to show ourselves to a broader audience," the band says with satisfaction.

In August, Latvian Blues Band music will be available for purchase or download from several Internet sites, including Amazon.com and Itunes.com.

This has been a successful year for the Latvian Blues Band. It took part in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis at the beginning of 2010 — the world’s largest and most representative blues forum. Shortly thereafter, the band recorded its new album, "When the Sun Goes Down". The album is scheduled for release in the autumn of 2010, when the band is also planning a gala concert to celebrate 10 years of Latvian Blues Band music.

International Blues Challenge — presented by the Memphis-based Blues Foundation, which also stages the Blues Music Awards each May — runs from Wednesday to Jan. 23 at various venues along Beale Street.

The 2010 event is celebrating its 26th anniversary with new records in terms of participants — 224 acts from 13 countries and 39 states in the USA, performing at 19 venues for crowds that are expected to number close to 10,000 for the duration of the event (compared with last year's 184 acts, from 36 states, nine countries, 16 venues and 8,000 attendees). The week also includes seminars for music professionals and a "Keeping the Blues Alive" awards ceremony.

"One of the biggest challenges we've had to deal with has been the growth," says Jay Sieleman, president of the Blues Foundation. "It's a good problem to have, but it keeps you from just being able to plan the same way twice. Because each year there are more acts, more facets to the event, more venues, more judges, more volunteers, more hotel rooms, and all of that to deal with." For Sieleman, the evolution of the Blues Challenge is measured by more than just numbers, but also by the quality of the performers. "Absolutely, the quality and the variety has increased considerably over the years," he says. "We've often told the judges that their hours are much longer now, but the quality is better. And they all agree. Judging the competition gets harder and harder each year."

We understand that participation in this event means not just meeting people, seeing old friends again, and playing some music together, but also moderate stress, full concentration and absolute giving it all up onstage. We know our strengths, and we are more than ready to present them!

Some of the U.S.blues artists who have performed with us at the Bite's Blues Club are in the International Blues Challenge Entrants list either.

Good Luck to all of us!

Latvian Blues Band Wins Spot in International Blues Challenge

The annual Baltic Blues Challenge competition was held in the German town of Eutin on October 30 and 31, and the Latvian Blues Band convincingly won in the category of blues groups. This means that it will take part in the International Blues Challenge finals in the United States.

Baltic Blues Challenge is a regional competition for blues performers, with artists from 10 countries in the Baltic Sea region. The aim is to find the best of the best for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, which is the largest and most representative forum for the blues. The 2010 International Blues Challenge will be the 26th event, and it will bring together more than 100 groups and 60 soloists and duets from all around the world.

The international jury at the Baltic Blues Challenge included a representative from the umbrella organisation, Blues Foundation, in the United States, as well as music journalists and producers from major European blues festivals. They evaluated the originality of each performance, its appropriateness for the genre, the artistic presentation and stage image of each group, and the individual talents of each member.

During the preparatory process, the organisers of the event concluded that the artistic level among this year’s participants would be very high, and the battle would be fierce. In order to stimulate the professionalism of competitors, a series of additional rules were implemented, and failure to observe those rules meant a loss of points. For instance, groups were allowed to perform for 20 minutes, and points were deducted if the performance was more than 10  seconds over that limit. Points were also deducted if the submitted promo materials were not in line with the fairly strict requirements which applied.

The Latvian Blues Band is delighted at the victory. “This victory and the subsequent publicity in the international blues media is equal to an expensive advertising campaign,” says Jânis “Bux” Bukovskis, the group’s soloist and guitarist. Manager Dailes Zigis adds: “We’ve been playing the blues and growing for the last 10 years. This is a logical result which testifies to our love for the blues and the self-denying work that we have done. Still, the group continues to have unlimited opportunities for growth.”
